A school-record 51 Carl Sandburg College student-athletes earned Academic All-Arrowhead Conference honors for their exceptional performances in the classroom during the 2018-19 academic year.

The Chargers’ 51 honorees this year surpasses the previous mark of 49 set in both 2014-15 and 2015-16. Student-athletes must have earned at least a 3.0 grade point average and passed a minimum of 12 credit hours in each semester to be considered for Academic All-Arrowhead status.

All 10 Chargers teams had at least two players earn the distinction. Baseball had the most representatives of any Sandburg squad, with half of its 32-man roster achieving the honor in addition to the Chargers winning their second straight conference championship.

Softball, which also won the conference title this spring, had 10 Academic All-Arrowhead honorees to lead Sandburg’s women’s teams.

Six Chargers who participated in multiple sports were named to the team, and 12 Chargers sophomores earned academic all-conference honors each of the past two years.

Additionally, volleyball freshman Peyton Bowman (Sciota, Ill./West Prairie) and baseball sophomore Jordan Chandler (Erie, Ill./Erie) were Sandburg’s nominees for the Bob Bopp Award, given to the conference’s outstanding male and female student-athletes.

Bowman, a 6-foot-3 middle hitter, was named Arrowhead Conference Most Valuable Player and Region IV Player of the Year in addition to being an NJCAA Division II Honorable Mention All-American and earning Academic All-Arrowhead honors. She also was named the NJCAA Division II Offensive Player of the Week for Aug. 26-Sept. 1 while helping Sandburg to its first conference title since 1990, a second straight Region IV tournament championship and a repeat trip to the national tournament.

After redshirting last season because of injury, Chandler was named the Arrowhead MVP after returning to hit .550 with six home runs and 24 RBIs against conference opponents. The third baseman helped Sandburg to a 17-1 conference record and its second straight Arrowhead championship. Because he redshirted in 2018, this marked Chandler’s third consecutive year receiving Academic All-Arrowhead honors.
